Life coach vs therapist: what's the difference?

A life coach helps people who are coping day to day get clear, decide and act on goals in career, relationships or business. A therapist, such as a counselling or clinical psychologist, helps people heal from emotional pain, trauma and mental health conditions. A psychiatrist is a doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medicine.

Coaching focuses on the present and future. It may look at how past experiences shape today's reactions, but it doesn't treat trauma or deep emotional wounds; that is therapy's work.

A life coach is likely the right fit if

  • you function day to day, but feel stuck, confused or empty, like something is missing
  • you overthink decisions, but it doesn't stop you sleeping or working for weeks
  • you want to change habits, build confidence or communicate better
  • you're facing a career, business, marriage or life decision
  • you want someone to keep you on track so you finally act on what you already know

See a counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist first if

  • you've felt low, empty or hopeless most days for two weeks or more
  • you have panic attacks, or anxiety that stops you working, sleeping or going out
  • you're struggling with trauma, abuse or grief that feels unbearable
  • you're using alcohol or substances to cope
  • you have thoughts of harming yourself (please call 14416 now)
  • your sleep, appetite or sense of reality has changed sharply

Should I see a life coach or a psychologist for overthinking?

If your overthinking is about decisions, the future or relationships and you still function normally, a life coach can help you break the pattern and act. If it comes with constant anxiety, panic attacks, weeks of poor sleep or low mood, see a psychologist or psychiatrist first. Coaching can come later.

Can coaching and therapy work together?

Yes. Many people see a therapist for healing and a coach for direction and action. If you're in therapy, tell your therapist before starting coaching. If, during coaching, your situation looks like it needs clinical support, you'll be told honestly and pointed to a qualified professional.

What coaching here does, and doesn't do

Does: life and business coaching; NLP-based coaching techniques; clarity, decisions, confidence, relationships, habits; mindfulness, visualisation (picturing your goal clearly) and journaling practices; online across India and in person in Jaipur.

Doesn't: diagnose or treat mental health conditions, prescribe medicine, or replace therapy with a trained psychologist or psychiatric care.
